Gregor's Room

"Well, leaving out the fact that the doors were locked, should he really call for help? In spite of all his miseries, he could not repress a smile at this thought."
-The Metamorphosis, Chapter 1

The feeling this piece is meant to invoke is discomfort in the unknown. Is he a bug or a human? What vain will this cause his family?
In the early chapters, he found it humoring of the thought of his family's reaction. The creation of a mere stick-like figure with no qualities other than his smile indicates a small sense of humanity through his expression of emotion. Black was used to represent the isolation and uncertainty that feared within the four walls of his room. The saturated yellow represents the mentally deteriorating hazard self-isolation results in. Finally, orange is related to the American tradition of Halloween, where people dress up as other things, often because they find liking in that different identity. Since it's uncertain of what Gregor might be, orange adds a taste of optimism. Furthermore, the entire room composition first appears in a typical bedroom setup, ending in the unraveled thoughts Gregor experiences.
